N.Y. Bake Shop Owner Arrested for Fraud
New York Superintendent Gregory Serio along with the Broome County Bureau of Fire Investigation and the Deposit Police Department announced the arrest of George S. Cushner, Jr. Cushner, the owner of Sweets and East Bake Shoppe was arrested for alleged arson and insurance fraud.
The arrest is the result of an intense investigation by all the involved agencies into a building fire at 147 Front Street in the Village of Deposit, which occurred on Jan. 11, 2003.
The fire in the Bake Shoppe resulted in the total destruction of the building, closing three businesses and leaving two families homeless. The apartments were occupied at the time of the fire. The total insurance loss from this fire may be in excess of $500,000.
Cushner was arraigned in the Town of Sanford Court and was released on his own recognizance.
