N.J. Chiropractor Sentenced for Reportedly Stealing $12,000 in Fraud Scam

New Jersey’s Acting Attorney General Peter Harvey announced that a Somerset County chiropractor has been sentenced for reportedly billing two health insurance companies more than $12,000 for chiropractic services he did not perform.

According to Vaughn McKoy, Acting Director, Division of Criminal Justice and Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Greta Gooden Brown, Roland Evans, 35, of Monmouth County, was sentenced to three years probation, ordered to pay more than $6,300 in restitution and to pay a $20,000 civil insurance fraud fine pursuant to the Insurance Fraud Prevention Act. In addition, Evans’ case will be referred to the Chiropractic Board for action as it relates to his chiropractic license.

Evans plead guilty on March 11 to a charge of Health Care Claims fraud contained in a criminal Accusation. At the guilty plea hearing before Somerset County Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman, Evans reportedly admitted that between January, 1996 and May, 2000, he submitted more than $12,300 in fraudulent billings to the Aetna Life Insurance Company and Guardian/phs Health Plans for chiropractic services which were never rendered.

The investigation by the Division of Criminal Justice – Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor determined that Aetna and Guardian paid Evans $6,302 as a result of the fraudulent billings.
