Nearly $2.7M Approved for N.Y. FEMA Applicants

In a short eight days since the disaster declaration was issued on April 19, at the request of New York Gov. George Pataki, nearly $2.7 million in individual and household assistance has been approved for distribution to applicants who suffered damages resulting from the recent storms and flooding.

“Many of those who were affected by the recent disaster have temporary housing and home repair expenses that can now be met,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne Jackson.

Homeowners and renters in declared counties who were affected by the disaster are urged to call and register for assistance at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for those with hearing or speech impairments. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until further notice. People also may register for assistance online anytime at www.fema.gov.

“We encourage anyone who has suffered damage from the disaster to call or file an application online,” said State Coordinating Officer James Tuffey, director of the New York State Emergency Management Office. “Those who received damages may be eligible for grants or Small Business Administration loans to help with temporary housing, emergency home repairs or other eligible needs. We can’t provide the help you need until you file an application.”

The counties of Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Orange, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Tioga and Ulster are included under the declaration.
