Virginia Weekend Safety Blitz Nabs Thousands of Drivers
An operation by Virginia State Police last weekend to promote traffic safety yielded more than 6,000 summonses and arrests statewide on Interstates 95 and 81.
Officials say there were no traffic fatalities during Operation Air, Land and Speed.
Along Interstate 81, about 1,765 speeders were stopped and authorities cited 303 reckless drivers. On Interstate 95, state police pulled over more than 1,500 drivers for speeding and issued almost 540 summonses for reckless driving.
Between the two interstates, 10 drunken drivers were taken off the road and authorities made 38 drug and felony arrests.
State Police Superintendent Colonel Steven Flaherty says motorists need to take responsibility for their behaviors on the road.
