Fire Destroys Upstate N.Y. Barn, Killing 25 Horses

Fire swept through an upstate New York stable, killing 25 horses, authorities said.

The owners of Burgundy Hill were able to rescue 11 horses, but two were in critical condition at the Equine Hospital at Cornell University, said Arlene Kreimeyer, one of the owners.

Maynard Fire Chief Bill Gagnon said it was unlikely investigators would be able to determine what caused the deadly blaze because of the extensive damage. The fire destroyed two barns and half of another, he said. Kreimeyer said she thought it may have been an electrical fire.

Kreimeyer said she had just finished feeding the horses inside the three boarding barns when she noticed smoke and flames in the middle barn around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The stables, located 45 miles east of Syracuse, have been family owned for 60 years, she said.
