R.I. Display Case Firm Fined 3 Times for Worker Injuries

February 19, 2008

A display case manufacturer has reached three settlement agreements with the federal government over workplace injuries since 2002.

Federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration records show Packaging Concepts Ltd. reported 125 injuries from 2000 and 2006. The number of injuries declined in 2005 and 2006.

The injuries ranged from a partly amputated finger, to a broken pelvis, crushed and fractured fingers, and punctured palms, fingers and thumbs, according to the Providence Journal.

The most serious recent injury occurred in December, when Leonardo Cos Elias lost his leg, buttock and half of one hip after becoming trapped in a machine while at work.

Company officials have declined comment because of the ongoing investigation into the accident.
