Connecticut Mayor Wants More Frequent Crane Inspections by State
Stamford, Connecticut Mayor Dannel Malloy has asked Gov. M. Jodi Rell to order more frequent state inspections of cranes.
In a letter to Rell, he said the city building official has authority to only inspect the base footing upon which the crane is seated. He says the state inspects the vertical structure of the crane and its operation.
A spokesman for Rell says the governor received Malloy’s letter and asked the state Department of Public Safety to inspect cranes.
The mayor also said residents are increasingly concerned about crane safety after recent failures in New York and Miami.
In August, one of four cranes at the Royal Bank of Scotland construction site in Stamford buckled. About 400 people were evacuated from downtown homes and offices.
