Loss from Maryland Arson Could Top $1 Million

October 8, 2008

Municipal officials in Pocomoke City, Maryland have begun the cleanup at the city’s primary Public Works building, the scene of a fire Sunday that fire investigators say was intentionally set.

Mayor Michael McDermott says authorities are speaking with persons of interest and damage from the fire could exceed $1 million.

The fire broke out early Sunday at a 7th Street warehouse filled with city equipment.

McDermott says municipal and environmental officials are preparing to clean up contaminants, including oil that spilled when a 55-gallon drum ruptured during the fire.

The Maryland Department of the Environment is testing soil, storm drains and city wells for signs of the spilled materials.
