Maryland City Says It Will Not Charge Drivers Who Crash

November 17, 2008

Motorists who crash in Ocean City, Maryland won’t have to worry about getting a bill from the Cape May County town.

The City Council has decided to scrap an ordinance proposed by Mayor Sal Perillo that would have set a fee structure of $435 to $1,200. The price varied depending on whether the town cleaned up after a fender-bender or had to cut a crash victim out of the wreckage.

The Council decided the fees would have upset tourists.

Ocean City firefighters responded to 232 motor vehicle accidents with injuries last year.
