Relatives of Nun Killed by Falling Closet Sue New York County
The family of a nun who died after a 200-pound closet fell on her at a suburban New York City nursing home has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the county where it happened.
The filing against Rockland County claims the 90-year-old nun’s death from a fractured skull was caused by the “gross recklessness” and “negligence” of the county and the Summit Park Hospital and Nursing Care Center it runs.
A lawyer for the family of Sister Mary Daniel says her death was preventable. Lawyer Kenneth Pryor says, “No one should die the way that she died.”
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
Summit Park already has been fined $17,000 over the nun’s death. The state Department of Health says more penalties are likely.
County officials have refused to comment.
