Philadelphia Jury Issues Mixed Verdict in Insurance Fraud Case

A personal injury lawyer was convicted of 18 felonies — but acquitted of numerous other charges — in an insurance-fraud case involving allegedly faked accidents.

The jury issued the mixed verdict Friday in the case of H. Allen Litt, 59, of Bryn Mawr.

Prosecutors said Litt led a scam using fake accidents to defraud insurance companies of more than $2.5 million over 25 years.

Litt was convicted of a first-degree felony of dealing in proceeds to promote unlawful activities; he was also convicted of six counts of insurance fraud and 11 counts of theft or attempted theft by deception, all third-degree felonies.

He was acquitted of the general charges of criminal conspiracy, corrupt organizations and multiple counts of insurance fraud and theft or attempted theft by deception.

The defense maintained that Litt was victimized by the four “runners” who found the fake claimants.

“We’re disappointed in the few cases where he was convicted,” defense lawyer Marc Neff said afterward. “It’s a very peculiar verdict because he was acquitted of the majority of the conduct testified to by the commonwealth’s most despicable witnesses.”

Deputy District Attorney Charles Gallagher said Litt “has been shown to be a dishonest, fraudulent attorney.”

Litt declined to comment.
