Train Gap Injuries: In New Jersey, Not Fatal But Painful
Not minding the gap on NJ Transit trains can be painful.
The Record of Bergen County has found that 58 passengers were hurt last year in accidents involving the gap between trains and station platforms.
The gaps vary in width from 6 to 11 inches. Officials say some are wider because trains would hit the platforms otherwise.
NJ Transit officials say wider gaps don’t produce more injuries. They say the busiest stations such as Newark’s Penn Station and New York Penn Station have the most frequent mishaps.
Among last year’s injured were a woman whose toes were fractured and ankle was crushed and a man who fell over a gap and hit his head on a platform bench.
