Officials Recalling Snack Mix in Western New York

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker is warning consumers not to eat a snack mix made by Snack King Foods in Rochester because of undeclared sulfites.

The product — “Island Snacks Natures Mix” — is in a 6.5 ounce plastic bag marked with the date July 24, 2010. The product was sold in Kmart stores in western New York.

Routine sampling by state food inspectors found high levels of sulfites not listed on the label. Sulfites can cause severe allergic reactions in some people with asthma.

As of Friday, the state hasn’t gotten any reports of illness involving the product.
