Maryland Grocer to Pay $275K to Settle Gender Suit
The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says Maryland grocery chain Mars Super Markets will pay $275,000 to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit.
The settlement was announced Tuesday.
Part-time deli clerk Gail Brown alleged that Mars wouldn’t hire her as an apprentice meat cutter in a Dundalk store because she’s a woman.
In the U.S. District Court settlement, Mars agreed to give Brown $118,000 for back pay, damages and her attorney’s fees. Other female applicants denied a meat cutter’s job will also receive back pay.
The federal agency said Tuesday that Mars has been ordered to train managers and offer jobs to any woman denied a meat cutter’s position.
