Operator Killed When Crane Falls into Virginia Lake
A crane operator has been killed after his machine fell off a barge into Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia.
Capt. Patrick Meeks of Franklin County’s Department of Public Safety says divers recovered the body of 54-year-old Roger Dale Goad of the community of Henry in about 60 feet of water Monday.
Meeks says Goad was working for a company that was replacing a dock in the Blackwater section of the lake.
He says the accident happened about 11:30 a.m. Goad’s body was recovered about two hours later.
Meeks says crews on are trying to retrieve the crane, which weighs nine to 10 tons.
