Three Hurt When Part of Store Collapses in D.C.
A Washington, D.C. fire official says three people have been hurt when part of a store in Southeast Washington collapsed.
Fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says a 10-foot by 20-foot wall of the AutoZone store in the 3900 block of South Capitol Street southeast collapsed around 11:45 a.m. Monday.
He says debris hit three people sitting outside at a bus stop near the store. They were treated for minor injuries. Some customers and store employees were evacuated, but they were not injured.
Piringer says the wall used to have a plate glass window but had been filled in with cinderblock bricks. He says the initial assessment shows a combination of building materials, vibration from nearby roads and weather conditions over time might have caused the collapse.
