Listing Tugboat Spills Fuel on Virginia River
A listing tugboat has leaked an estimated 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel in an inlet of the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River in Norfolk.
Battalion Chief Harry Worley of Norfolk Fire-Rescue said Monday the fuel leak has been contained to the inlet. The Coast Guard is working to get a contractor at the scene to ensure the spill doesn’t enter the river as the tide goes out.
Worley said the inactive tug was moored to another tug and likely took on water during the incoming tide, causing fuel to escape the 75- to 80-foot vessel. He said the tug has not sunk and it has been stabilized.
