Two Men Indicted in New Jersey for $13K Insurance Fraud Scheme
Two New Jersey men have been indicted for masterminding a so-called “give-up” scheme to collect insurance money from Liberty Mutual on a car that was never stolen.
Prosecutors have charged Shannon Daney and Nicola Bellapingna with conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, insurance fraud and attempted theft by deception.
According to the indictment, in late 2006 and early 2007, the two conspired to falsely report to police that Daney’s 2006 Honda Civic had been stolen. The two also reported the theft to the Liberty Mutual and tried to collect $13,000 from the insurer by creating the false impression that the Honda had been stolen.
Fraud investigators found that the Honda had been involved in an automobile accident in Washington Township on the same day that it was reportedly stolen from a parking lot in Glassboro later that evening — making the theft impossible, prosecutors say
