$25M Lawsuit Filed over 2008 Virginia Shooting Rampage
A $25 million wrongful death lawsuit has been filed in connection with a 2008 shooting rampage in Virginia that left one man dead and two other people injured.
The lawsuit was filed earlier this month in Wythe County Circuit Court by Sharon Bane and her father, Jerry Covey. Defendants are the state, Wytheville, Wythe County and two prosecutors.
Bane’s husband was fatally shot and Covey was wounded during the shootings.
The lawsuit claims the man convicted in the shootings, Douglas Albert Jaccard, shouldn’t have been on free on bond for an unrelated charge at the time.
Wytheville and the county are seeking the lawsuit’s dismissal. The prosecutors’ attorney says they don’t believe the case has any merit.
