Connecticut to Buy Then Demolish Flood-Prone Properties in East Haven

The federal government has approved a grant of nearly $1.4 million for the state of Connecticut to buy and then demolish five flood-prone properties in East Haven.

Demolishing the properties is intended to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of flood damage.

A spokesman for the state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security says the deal is the first multiple property purchase completed in Connecticut under a Federal Emergency Management Agency program.

Scott D. DeVico, spokesman for the state agency, says the sale of the homes to the state is scheduled for August and the homes will be demolished within 90 days of their sale.

State Rep. Michael Lawlor says flooding has been a problem for years for several homeowners.
