Fire Hits Abandoned Connecticut Ammunition Plant
A heavy fire at a long-vacant ammunition factory in Bridgeport poured thick, black smoke into the sky, but no injuries were reported.
The Connecticut Post in Bridgeport reports that numerous fires have hit the series of brick and timber buildings at the former Remington Arms plant since it closed decades ago. The most recent fire was in February.
The paper reported that one building appeared near collapse during Saturday’s blaze.
Fire officials say the fire was reported at about 11 a.m. and they had it under control an hour later. Police urged people to stay away from the scene and blocked roads to keep away dozens of spectators.
The factory, which opened in 1867, has no gas or electric supply.
