Lawyer: Deal Reached to Care for Paralyzed Gymnast Injured in New York
The New York lawyer for a champion Chinese gymnast says she has settled claims brought against the U.S. Gymnastics Federation and insurance companies after she was paralyzed in an accident at the 1998 Goodwill Games.
The lawyer, Ming Hai, said Tuesday that the settlement was reached Monday between U.S. defendants and the gymnast, Sang Lan. He says she will receive health insurance and compensation. Lan broke her neck during a warm-up vault at the games in New York.
A lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan earlier this year alleged that the federation and insurance companies failed to follow through on promises they made after the accident.
U.S. Gymnastics said Tuesday it was never served the lawsuit and the matter was settled through insurance carriers.
