New York Village Pays $16.5M Settlement to Injured Girl
A New York village will pay $16.5 million to a young girl severely injured by a car crossing a busy intersection.
Attorneys for Mildrekia Watson announced the lawsuit settlement Wednesday with the village of Hempstead. The driver’s insurance company will pay an additional $100,000.
Wilson, now 10, was struck by the car five years ago crossing Fulton Avenue. Her lawyer said a crossing guard was across the street and not properly situated to assist her.
She suffered a traumatic brain injury and broken bones. She is in a wheelchair, cannot speak and has vision in only one eye.
The village attorney said in a statement the settlement was in the best interest of all parties. She said new safety measures are being considered for schoolchildren crossing the intersection.
