New York College Has Safety Stewards Patrol Gorge Trails
Stewards are now trekking the trails in the beautiful but treacherous gorges on Cornell University’s Ithaca, N.Y., campus as part of safety efforts enacted after three deaths last summer.
Cornell’s Todd Miner tells WBNG-TV in Binghamton that the three gorge stewards have talked with more than 300 people in five days. They recommend ways to enjoy the gorges and their tumbling waterfalls and pools safely.
Cornell Outdoor Education has taken other safety steps such as new signs, repaired railings and trail repairs. Starting this fall, there will be a bus to take students to state parks where they can swim legally instead of swimming in dangerous gorges.
