9 Manhole Covers Stolen in 4 Long Island Communities
Authorities are searching for the suspects who have stolen manhole covers from the streets of four Long Island, N.Y., communities.
Highway Superintendent William Naughton says nine covers were removed in the past week from Greenlawn, Northport, Huntington and Huntington Station.
He says it’s not unusual to see a manhole cover stolen occasionally. According to Newsday in the past few months the agency has had to replace about 20 of the cast-iron covers. Some are taken from the middle of the road, making driving more treacherous.
Naughton says it costs about $400 to replace each cover.
