Councilman Wants Review of Baltimore Speed Cameras
The vice chairman of the Baltimore City Council’s public safety committee is calling for a hearing on the city’s speed camera program, while the mayor is defending the system.
Councilman Brandon Scott told The Baltimore Sun on Sunday that the city needs to do better in managing the system after a newspaper investigation found the $40 citations can be issued inaccurately.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake renewed her defense of the traffic camera system on Monday.
Rawlings-Blake points to Washington’s speed cameras, saying they are taking in about three times as much money as Baltimore’s cameras. The mayor’s office say Washington speed cameras generated nearly $85 million in revenue in the 2012 fiscal year, compared with $27.5 million in Baltimore.
The mayor has appointed a task force to review the system.
