Commercial Burglaries Up on Long Island After Storm
Authorities say Long Island, N.Y., experienced a dramatic increase in the number of commercial burglaries following Superstorm Sandy.
Newsday reports that from Oct. 30 through Nov. 5 burglaries in Nassau County went up from 12 last year to 73 this year.
In Suffolk, the number of commercial burglaries rose to 117 between Oct. 28 and Nov. 14, compared to 70 during the same period last year.
Residential burglaries were down compared with the same period last year.
In Nassau, they dropped from 44 to 39 between Oct. 30 and Nov. 5. In Suffolk, they dropped from 212 to 171 between Oct. 28 and Nov. 14.
Authorities say some of the spike in commercial burglaries occurred in blacked-out areas.
Overall, crime in the wake of Sandy was down in both counties.
