Company Fined $7,000 in Death of New Hampshire Steel Worker

December 17, 2012

A company has been fined $7,000 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration following a construction accident that killed a steel worker in Claremont, N.H.

Scott Bates of Claremont was killed June 8 when he was pinned under a trailer at the Canam Steel plant, which makes steel girders and arches for large bridges.

The Valley News reports OSHA fined Structal Bridges, a division of Canam Steel. The report said Structal failed to furnish a workplace that was free of recognized hazards and that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by or crushed by the tires or wheels of a trailer. OSHA states the problem was corrected during an inspection.

The Claremont plant referred calls to its Maryland office, which did not immediately return a call.
