Trucker Cleared in Massachusett’s Cyclist’s Death
The driver of an armored truck that struck and killed a bicyclist in Northampton, Mass., more than seven years ago has been found not at fault in the woman’s death.
The truck driver, Rafael Sevilla, was never criminally charged in the September 2005 death of 23-year-old Margaret Sanders near the Smith College campus.
But Sanders’ estate filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver.
Sevilla’s lawyer tells The Daily Hampshire Gazette that a Hampshire Superior Court jury cleared his client last week following 11 hours of deliberations.
Police say Sevilla turned into a driveway on the Smith College campus, striking Sanders. Witnesses said Sevilla was not speeding and did not turn suddenly.
Campbell says Sevilla was traumatized by the accident.
