Meteorologists say the relatively weak EF-1 tornado hit Paramus in central Bergen County shortly before 3:20 p.m.
The weather service says it cut a path of about 100 yards wide and 1.25 miles long.
Wind gusts reached about 100 mph.
Meteorologists say a number of trees snapped or were uprooted.
No injuries were reported.
Monday’s stormy weather also knocked out power to about 10,000 homes and businesses around the state.
