Boater Safety Measures at New York’s Tappan Zee Bridge
Officials say lighting will be changed at the Tappan Zee Bridge to make the construction zone safer for boaters.
The Journal News says the navigational lights will be rearranged under the main span of the existing bridge, which links Rockland and Westchester counties.
On July 26, two boaters were killed and four injured when their powerboat crashed into a barge.
The victims’ families say the barge was not visible in the dark, although the lighting on the barge met federal standards. Since the crash, more lights have been added to equipment.
In September, the Coast Guard established a zone around the Tappan Zee to restrict river traffic and lower speeds as needed.
