East Haven Police Want to Equip Cars With Fire Extinguishers

East Haven, Conn., police are asking the town to equip their cars with fire extinguishers after a motorist caught fire and died after crashing his car near gas pumps.

Daniel Kelson died from burns on May 24. Using an extinguisher from the gas station, an officer eventually put out the fire consuming the 23-year-old man.

The New Haven Register reports that officer Bob Nappe, president of the local police officers union, says there has been no follow-up on his requests for fire extinguishers in cruisers.

Police Chief Brent Larrabee said officers must be trained in how to use the extinguishers. He said he’s been working with East Haven’s insurance provider to get approval for the fire extinguishers.
