New York Senator Seeks More Safety Measures for Lake Pier
Sen. Charles Schumer was in the Rochester, N.Y., area to call on the federal government to install lights on a Lake Ontario pier that has been the scene of two late-night boating accidents this summer and a fatal crash six years ago.
Boats crashed into the Summerville Pier in Irondequoit on the nights of June 19 and July 4, leaving seven people with injuries. In June 2008, three people were killed and two others injured when their boat hit the same pier at the mouth of the Genesee River.
Schumer held a news conference early Monday afternoon at a condominium complex overlooking the pier. He wants the U.S. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers to make the structure more visible to boaters at night.
A Coast Guard station is located near the pier.
