Mass. DOI: Insurers Received Over 1,300 Claims From Revere Tornado

The Massachusetts Division of Insurance (DOI) said the state’s insurers have so far received more than 1,300 claims from a rare tornado that ripped through the coastal city of Revere on July 28.

The DOI said regulators have been collecting data from Massachusetts insurers since mid-August on claims related to the July 28 tornado. “This data is being updated — and therefore refined — every other week,” a DOI spokesperson said Wednesday. “We have some totals from the first data report, which suggests that a large number of smaller claims related to tree and debris damage have been filed.”

Overall, the current totals are as follows:

• Total claims (residential and commercial property, personal and commercial auto): 1,307
• Claims closed with payment: 519
• Claims closed without payment: 101
• Incurred loss average claim: $10,693

The tornado hit Revere, a city of about 52,000 residents, with winds of up to 120 mph. No deaths or serious injuries were reported. Meteorologists reported it was the first tornado to touch down in Massachusetts’ Suffolk County since at least 1950.
