XL Catlin’s reinsurance operations announced two key leadership appointments, both effective January 2017.
Jonathan (Jon) Gale, currently chief executive London Reinsurance, will take over as chief executive Bermuda Reinsurance subject to Bermuda Immigration approval, while Rob Littlemore, currently underwriting director London Reinsurance, is being promoted to chief executive London Reinsurance. Both will report to Charles Cooper, currently chief executive Bermuda Reinsurance, who will become chief executive of XL Catlin’s Reinsurance business group as of January 1, 2017.
In addition, Greg Hendrick, who currently heads XL Catlin’s global Reinsurance operations will be president, Property & Casualty overseeing the Company’s entire P&C operation as of January 1, 2017,
Gale joined legacy Catlin in 2002 and held progressively senior underwriting roles before becoming chief executive London Reinsurance upon the creation of XL Catlin in May 2015. Tasked with launching and establishing the new XL Catlin reinsurance operation in the London market with its expanded scale and offering, he earned market recognition for the unit as demonstrated in the Gracechurch London (Re)Insurers Report 2016. Gale previously worked in Bermuda, between 2004 and 2008. Before joining the company, he was an underwriter with R F Bailey Underwriting Agencies Ltd and CNA Reinsurance.
Littlemore, an established figure in the London market, started his career with a brief period as a Lloyd’s broker, has 28 years’ experience underwriting US Casualty reinsurance classes. He was leading a US Casualty Treaty portfolio team for Wellington Syndicate 2020 when it was acquired by Catlin in 2006. He became Catlin’s head of Reinsurance in London in 2008 and became XL Catlin’s underwriting director of London Reinsurance in May 2015. Between May 2012 and 2015, he was appointed to the Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) Board to represent Non-Marine Underwriting and in 2015 he was named in the Gracechurch report “London’s Leading 100 underwriters”.
Tenn.-based Brentwood Services Administrators Inc. (BSA), recently promoted Nick Saldana to the position of claim representative II in its Tennessee Claims Department, according to Jeff Pettus, president and chief executive officer of BSA.
With increased responsibility, Saldana is reviewing, processing,and handling medical workers’ compensation claims as assigned by Bonnie Moser, AIC, WCLS, Tennessee claims supervisor. He determines the compensability of the claim and extent of liability, and communicates directly with clients, employers, injured workers, physicians and attorneys, to manage claims in a timely and economic manner.
Initially, Saldana came to Brentwood Services Administrators in October 2013 as a claim assistant with the occupational accident team. His bilingual skills in Spanish enable him to assist with BSA clients and their employees. In May 2015, he was promoted to claim examiner II in the Tennessee Claims Department, and in October 2015 was elevated to the claim representative I position.
Ten months after its last chief executive officer departed, the national organization of state insurance regulators has named former Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael F. Consedine as its new CEO. Consedine will assume the job in early 2017.
As the new CEO of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), Consedine will lead the Washington, D.C. office with primary responsibility over state and federal government affairs and international activities. He will act as an advocate and spokesperson for the association and handle outreach to federal and international policymakers, state government associations, as well as consumer and industry representatives, according to the announcement.
Consedine is currently with the Netherlands-based pensions and life insurance group Aegon that owns Transamerica in the U.S.
Consedine will succeed Andy Beal, current acting CEO, who will return to his roles as chief operating officer and chief legal officer, overseeing the Kansas City and New York offices and managing the day-to-day operations of the organization.
Beal was named acting director after the departure of CEO Ben Nelson in January when Nelson’s contract expired.
Consedine served as Pennsylvania insurance commissioner from 2011 to 2015. He was appointed insurance commissioner by Republican Gov. Tom Corbett in January 2011 and confirmed by the state Senate in April 2011. He left the post in January 2015, when Democratic Gov.-elect Tom Wolf was sworn into office. In Pennsylvania, the insurance commissioner is appointed by the governor.
Prior to his time as commissioner, Consedine was partner and vice chair of law firm Saul Ewing’s Insurance Practice Group. While in private practice Consedine counseled insurance companies, reinsurers, producers, and commercial policyholders in complex insurance regulatory and corporate matters.
From 1995-1999, he was department counsel for the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, representing the department in litigation proceedings and on transactional filings.
He joined Aegon’s Transamerica unit in Baltimore in March 2015 as senior vice president, deputy general counsel and executive director of government affairs for its U.S. subsidiary, Transamerica. In August of this year, he added responsibility for Aegon’s government policy worldwide and the title of global head of government and policy affairs.
He is familiar with the NAIC organization, having served as president-elect and in other officer positions within the NAIC, during which time he chaired a number of NAIC committees including the International Insurance Relations Committee, the Reinsurance Task Force and the Health Care Reform Alternatives Working Group.
In 2014, he was one of 21 individuals including state regulators, insurance executives, college professors and consumer advocates named to serve as members of the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI) of the Treasury Department.
The Board of Directors of Tokio Solution Management Ltd. (Tokio Solution), the third party capital markets facilitation arm of Tokio Millennium Re AG (TMR), announced a simplification of Tokio Solution’s organizational structure.
The changes are a result of an overall strategic review of Tokio Solution in light of the evolution of TMR’s third party capital (TPC) strategy. Following the formation of TMR’s Capital Solutions unit in 2015 and further operational enhancements at TMR, it was concluded that Tokio Solution’s management structure would be simplified in order to focus resources on account management and technical portfolio support for TPC partners, with TMR’s Capital Solutions unit serving as the driver of convergence-related product development and innovation.
As a result of the restructuring, the Co-CEO role at Tokio Solution was no longer required. Susan Lane, who held this position, has now left the company.
Tsuyoshi (Harry) Harigai has become the sole chief executive officer. He joined the Tokio Marine Group in 1995 and has more than 20 years’ experience in the insurance and reinsurance field. He was appointed head of Operations for Tokio Millennium Re AG, Bermuda Branch and a member of the Board of Tokio Solution in July 2013. Butch Agnew, will remain vice president, ILS Portfolio Management and Dave Courcy will remain vice president, Structuring and Finance.
