Ill. Home Repairman Nailed in Fraud Case, Will Pay More than $80,000 to 32 Victims
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced that after more than 10 years of evading the law, a DuPage County man has been sentenced to seven years behind bars, the maximum penalty for his crimes.
In 1993, the Office of the Attorney General indicted Larry Broyles on seven counts of aggravated home repair fraud, Class 2 felonies, and 25 counts of home repair fraud, Class 4 felonies. Warrants were issued for Broyles’ arrest, but he was not returned to Illinois until late 2003 after being captured in Indiana.
On Monday, March 29, Broyles, now 63, pleaded guilty to seven counts of aggravated home repair fraud and was sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). Broyles also was ordered to pay restitution totaling more than $80,000 to the 32 victims named in the original indictment.
Additionally, Broyles pleaded guilty to an unrelated count of deceptive practice, a Class 4 felony, charged by the DuPage County State’s Attorney Office for passing bad checks to building supply stores. Broyles was sentenced to one year in IDOC, to run consecutive to the seven-year sentence, for the additional charge.
In the early 1990s, Broyles was the sole proprietor of a home repair business operating out of the Dupage County area. During this time, Broyles contracted for roofing repairs, window installations, siding and general carpentry work, accepted down payments but reportedly completed little or no work at all.
