S.D. Reports July 4th Highway Program a Success

No crashes occurred on the roadways patrolled by South Dakota Highway Patrol Troopers during the Fourth of July Operation Safe.

“We’re very pleased we reached our goal of having a crash free Fourth of July weekend,” said Capt Rod Olerud. “We wanted to raise an awareness of unsafe driving behaviors and make a lasting difference in South Dakotans’ driving habits.”

The Operation Safe mobilization took place along the following South Dakota roadways:

· Highway 12
· Highway 14
· Highway 212

“We issued citations for a variety of violations including driving under the influence, speeding and failure to wear seatbelts,” said Olerud. “Troopers said speeding violations were the most prevalent.”

During the mobilization, troopers increased their visibility, saturation patrols, education, media involvement and enforcement activities. Special emphasis was placed on all traffic violations including speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failure to wear seatbelts, which all contribute to crashes, serious injuries and death.

“We are very pleased with the results of Operation Safe along these roadways,” added Public Safety Secretary Tom Dravland. “But we also understand there is much room to improve safety and awareness around the state as there were four fatal crashes, five deaths and a number of injuries in various locations during the holiday weekend.”
