Ohio Employers with One Outstanding Claim Earning a Second Chance

May 2, 2005

Should a company with a flawless safety record be plagued by high premiums if a single, uncharacteristic accident occurs? The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation said “no”.

“Unfortunately, as hard as we try to prevent them, accidents do happen,” said James Conrad, BWC administrator and CEO. “We know that even the safest employers, those who have years pass by without injuries, may have a workplace accident. We are proud to offer a program to help companies deal with the impact of an uncharacteristic claim.”

The One Claim Program (OCP) is designed to help employers who are members of a group rating program and have an outstanding claim on their experience. The program requires employers to attend Workers’ Compensation University and another approved educational opportunity. It also encourages the development of a stronger relationship with workers’ comp partners. Employers who qualify for OCP receive a 40 percent premium discount.

Applications for OCP were due by March 31. Of the 900 Ohio companies eligible for the OCP, BWC received almost 850 applications.

In fiscal year 2004, more than 200,000 Ohio businesses had zero claims filed. Many of these businesses enjoy low premiums and participate in a group rating program. Group rating programs are offered by independent organizations. These sponsors are able to achieve a lower premium for their members by combining the experience of many similar employers. Regrettably, when a member of group rating has an unfortunate workplace injury, they could potentially be kicked out of the program.

“The cost of one claim has the ability to financially devastate a company,” Conrad said. “Over time, OCP will help many of Ohio’s safest employers stay in business.”
