Nebraska Highway Fatalities on Track for Record Low

May 19, 2009

Nebraska Office of Highway Safety reports that roadway fatalities are down 16 percent compared to this time a year ago.

According to the latest data from the state, there were 63 deaths on Nebraska road in the first part of 2009.

This marks a decrease from the first part of 2008, which went on to have one of the lowest fatality rates on state record.

The highway safety office says the continued decline is due to an increase in seat-belt use, a reduction in roadway travel due to the economy, safer vehicles and better roadway design.

Traffic-safety education, combined with effective legislation and traffic enforcement, are also factors.
