University of Northern Iowa Dome Roof Repair Pegged at $4.3M

December 7, 2009

Repairs to the Dome roof at the University of Northern Iowa, which was damaged by a wind and hail storm last summer is estimated at $4.3 million.

The Dome is insured by Traveler’s Insurance Co. as part of the university’s comprehensive policy, which has a $100,000 deductible. In all, damage at the university from the July 10 storm totaled about $5.4 million.

University officials have requested permission from the university’s regents to move forward with a project that would repair or replace parts of the UNI-Dome roof.

Doug Jensen, the school’s associate director of facilities and operations, says the roof’s stainless steel “skin” is full of dents and divots from wind and hail that ripped through Black Hawk County on July 10.
