Former Indiana Bank Manager Sentenced for Theft, Arson

A former assistant manager of an Indianapolis, Ind., bank has been sentenced to home detention for setting fire to the bank vault in an attempt to cover his thefts.

Dwayne Roberts was sentenced Dec. 15 to two years’ home detention and two years’ probation.

The 31-year-old Roberts was arrested in May and pleaded guilty to arson and theft charges in October.

Police have said Roberts had been stealing money from a Fifth Third Bank branch for several months. They say he tried to conceal a May theft by setting a fire to a box of cash in the vault before closing the branch, but as he left the vault, he dropped his keys and locked them inside.

Investigators said Roberts hoped burning some cash would conceal how much money he allegedly had taken from the vault.
