Drunken Fifties: More DUIs Among Older North Dakota Drivers

North Dakota drivers in their 50s accounted for the biggest jump in the state’s number of drunken driving arrests last year.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says he’s surprised by the increase. He says drivers in that age group should be expected “to know better by now.”

A new report says police made 5,819 arrests for driving under the influence in North Dakota in 2009. That’s four more drunken driving arrests than the year before.

The numbers in most age categories held steady or declined. But the number of DUI arrests for drivers aged 50 to 59 went up from 477 to 582. That’s a 22 percent increase.
