Former North Dakota Workers’ Comp Director Wants to Reopen Case

August 12, 2010

North Dakota’s former workers compensation director will ask a judge to revisit his felony conviction a month after the state Supreme Court affirmed it.

Sandy Blunt was convicted in December 2008 of misspending more than $26,000 in Workforce Safety and Insurance agency funds. He was ordered to perform 1,000 hours of community service.

His lawyer says he’ll file a request that Blunt’s conviction be tossed out, or that he get a new trial.

The request comes after one of Blunt’s prosecutors, Cynthia Feland, asked a judge to determine whether she violated any rules on disclosing prosecution materials to the defense before Blunt’s trial.

Blunt’s lawyer says Feland didn’t turn over a state auditor’s memo that was important to Blunt’s defense.
