Insured Losses from September Storms in Ohio Top $17M
The insurance industry says at least $17.2 million in damage was caused by the rash of tornadoes and wind storms that pounded Ohio on Sept. 16.
The Ohio Insurance Institute released a preliminary tally of insured losses on Oct. 19. Final numbers could show homeowners and businesses took a $20 million hit.
By comparison, the state had far larger insured losses of $1.4 billion from Hurricane Ike in September 2008.
Last month’s powerful weather set off a rash of tornadoes over a wide area, from Wooster in northeast Ohio to extreme southeast Ohio. Gov. Ted Strickland issued an emergency declaration for Athens, Meigs and Perry counties in the southeast, where scores of homes were destroyed or heavily damaged
