Storms Rock Midwest; Tornadoes, Damage Reported
No human deaths or severe injuries have been reported from an evening of tornado sirens and sightings in western and central Iowa, but livestock were killed or injured and buildings on rural properties were reportedly damaged.
The National Weather Service is investigating reports of up to five tornadoes sighted in western and central Iowa on Mar. 22.
At least one tornado was also reported in Nebraska, where home siding was pockmarked, roofs were damaged and windows broken by hail and high winds from storms that raced through the eastern part of the state.
Four grain bins were mangled near Craig, Neb., and hail the size of golf balls punched holes in siding and broke windows in Valley. Half-inch hail and 60 mph winds were reported in Otoe County.
Two tornadoes were reported near Winterset, Iowa, around 6:30 p.m. on Mar. 22. Farmers and other owners of rural property say outbuildings and trees were knocked down or heavily damaged. There also were reports of livestock being killed or injured.
Hail reaching the size of golf balls damaged siding and roofs and broke windows in Logan and other towns. A tornado was reported nearby.
