Missouri to Participate in 11-State Earthquake Drill
Missouri is one of 11 states taking part in a regional earthquake preparedness drill later this month.
The “Great Central U.S. Shakeout” exercise is planned April 28 at 10:15 a.m. At that moment, participants will drop to the ground, take cover under a desk or table and practice waiting for about 60 seconds.
Missouri officials say 275 school districts and several colleges and universities have registered to participate. About 19,000 employees at hospitals and medical facilities also have signed up.
At least three of the largest earthquakes in continental U.S. history rocked southeastern Missouri 200 years ago along the New Madrid fault. The area still has frequent small earthquakes.
