Kansas Athletics Gets Insurance from Ticket Scandal
Kansas Athletics Inc. has recovered nearly $340,000 from an insurance company for losses in a ticket scheme that cost the department at least $2 million.
The Lawrence Journal-World reported Wednesday that part of those funds was $250,000 in March from CAN, which had a policy protecting the department against property damage and theft.
The department filed its claim after employees in the ticket office stole at least 17,000 basketball and football tickets and sold them for personal profit. Five former employees have been convicted in the scheme.
The $250,000 claim was the maximum allowed under authority’s insurance policy.
The department also has received $64,500 from Ben Kirtland, former associate athletic director for development who will be sentenced Thursday in Wichita, as well as nearly $25,500 from two other employees.
