South Dakota Officials Expect Flood Damage Figure Will Rise
State officials say damage from spring flooding in South Dakota is certain to top the early estimate of $7 million.
The president issued a disaster declaration on May 13 based on a preliminary assessment of damage to roads, bridges, culverts and other public infrastructure.
The declaration for 28 counties opens the door to financial help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Officials point to 2010 when a preliminary flood damage assessment showed $8 million in damages, but actual costs exceeded $20 million.
Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist says his department is assessing damage to state and county roads so it can apply for emergency relief that’s not available through FEMA.
