School Bus Crashes Decline Steadily in Ohio

August 17, 2011

Children are returning to school in Ohio during an era of safer school bus travel in the state.

State Highway Patrol records show crashes involving school buses have declined steadily in recent years, from 1,671 in 2006 to 1,579 last year.

Patrol Sgt. Aaron Gentry tells the Dayton Daily News that in most of the accidents a bus is rear-ended by another vehicle. He says other crashes involve school buses sliding off icy roads, or two buses colliding in a parking lot.

The patrol is advising drivers to be cautious as schools reopen. The agency said in a news release Tuesday that it has 23 teams inspecting all Ohio school buses to make sure they’re safe for the new school year.
