1 Killed, 9 Injured in Chicago High-Rise Fire
An early morning fire in a Chicago high-rise has killed a woman who got stuck in an elevator and injured nine others, including two firefighters.
Firefighters were called to the 21-story building about 2 a.m. Sunday.
Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva tells the Chicago Tribune that the fire started in an apartment on the 12th floor and smoke poured out into the building from the apartment’s open door.
He says firefighters found the woman who died in an elevator on the 12th floor. He says the elevator doors were open, and it’s not clear if the woman was trying to get out of the building or going up. The woman did not live in the apartment where the fire started.
No cause has yet been determined for the fire.
